It set off a chain of events which threatened regional peace; displaced millions of Afghans from their homes; killed hundreds of thousands of civilians and combatants; stymied the socio-economic progress of the victim country. It also initiated the disintegration of the erstwhile USSR. Most horrendous fallout of this strategic blunder was that the terrorism became a preferred tool of statecraft and a new military political entity – the ‘Non-state Actor’ was born to threaten the world peace.
